For the purpose of joint planning activities in the Greater Mekong subregion (China, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Lao PDR), the demonstration study for power system of Myanmar is carried out to illustrate how a market tool such as GTMax can be used to simulate and optimize a power system operation and generation dispatch, as well as to assess opportunities for cross border power trading. Within the study, for 2020 as a target year, two development scenarios for Myanmar were analyzed:

  • conservative scenario (environmental oriented scenario, with slower pace of generation development and low possibilities for regional interaction)
  • ambitious scenario (export oriented scenario, with progressive generation development and high possibilities for regional interaction)

Study results include overview of energy balance, generation mix and production costs in Myanmar, cross border exchange with Thailand and China, as well as assessment of economic benefits from regional power trade.

Type of services provided:

  • Analysis on future development of consumption, production and transmission network in Myanmar
  • Development of GTMax reference model for the power system in Myanmar
  • Demonstration analysis of generation portfolio optimization and unit dispatch in Myanmar
  • Impact assessment & economic benefits from regional trade with Thailand and China
