Increasing the Short Circuit Power by Installing a Synchronous Condenser with an Analysis of the Inertia of the System in the Lastva Sustation

Client: JSC CGES (Montenegro)

Type: Study

Finishing date: September 2022

Team: Nikola Georgijevic – Project Manager, M. Ivanovic

The main goal of this project is to analyze the operation of the transmission system of Montenegro after the installation of the second HVDC pole. The most critical operating scenario is the summer minimum, in which HVDC works in inverter mode (import to CG). In this scenario, it is first necessary to examine the capacities of the transmission network for power transfer from the HVDC plant, both in the base and in the N-1 cases.

After determining the critical outages and the limitations resulting from them, the SCR and ESCR indicators were determined in accordance with the established limitations. In addition to the static analyses, the impact of the installation of the synchronous condenser on the local inertia of the system in the vicinity of TS Lastva, as well as the overall inertia of the Montenegrin power system, was examined as part of the dynamic analyses.

Type of services provided:

  • Load flow analysis
  • Contingency N-1 analysis
  • Voltage regulation and reactive power control analysis
  • Short circuit analysis
  • Analysis of the impact of installing a synchronous condenser on network strength (SCR and ESCR) for different connection variants
  • Transient stability analysis
  • The impact of installing a synchronous condenser on the overall inertia of the Montenegrin power system.
