Optimal Sizing of Variable Shunt Reactor in SS Lastva

Client: CGES AD (Montenegro)

Type: Analysis

Finishing date: April 2020

Team: Nebojsa Jovic - Project Manager, M. Vukovic – Consultant, B. Lutovac

The objective of this analysis is urgent mitigation of high voltages in SS Lastva that endanger normal operation of converter station Kotor (Montenegrin side of HVDC system between Montenegro and Italy) and cause rapid ageing of high voltage equipment in SS Lastva. The analysis defines optimal technical characteristics of variable shunt reactor planned to be installed in SS Lastva, ensuring 400kV voltages within required limits in SS Lastva in the perspective topological scenarios and characteristic operating regimes.

  • Analyzed topological scenarios
    • Actual network topology
    • 400kV OHL Lastva – Pljevlja in operation, one pole of the bipolar HVDC system in operation
    • 400kV OHLs Lastva – Pljevlja, both poles of the bipolar HVDC system are in operation
  • Characteristic operating regimes:
    • Export (50-600)МW from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia in Italy
    • Export (50-600)МW from Italy in Serbia, Albania and Greece
    • Export (50-1000)МW from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia in Italy (both poles in operation)
    • Export (50-1000)МW from Italy in Serbia, Albania and Greece (both poles in operation).

Type of services provided:

  • Power flow analysis
  • Voltage profile analysis
  • Security assessment
  • Optimal sizing of reactive power compensation device
