Power Quality

client: AD MEPSO (Macedonia)

type: Study (Power Quality)

finishing date: September 2012

team: Prof. Dr. Jovica V. Milanovic - Project Manager, Principal Consultant; A. Oros, T. Martinovic, P. Miksa, Z. Velickovic, M. Vukovic - Consultant

The goal of the project was to raise the knowledge level within AD MEPSO on both aspects, general theoretical and practical knowledge and knowledge on the actual disturbance levels within the transmission system, to prepare specifications of the power quality performance of transmission network in the Republic of Macedonia and trough measurements of the power quality in several defined locations in an optimal way to give recommendations for appropriate investments for improving the power quality in the Macedonian transmission network. A measurement campaign included detailed analysis of the measurements needed to identify sources of disturbances, to evaluate the level of power quality in the transmission system and to set planning levels.

Key objectives of the power quality study and project overall: power-quality measurements, analysis and interpretation of these measurements, voltage and current harmonics, involvement in standard-setting activities, setting of power-quality limits, and power-quality education.

Type of services provided:

  • Estimated voltage quality throughout the 110-kV system in Macedonia via measurements performed in 110/x kV substation;
  • Harmonic analyses
  • Comparing the voltage disturbance levels with limits recommended in international documents (IEC, CIGRE and CENELEC).
  • Relating the voltage disturbance levels to the local load, and to loads and power flows elsewhere.
  • Identifying critical situations, where the disturbance levels are close to or exceeding the abovementioned limits.
  • The transfer of knowledge on power quality from the Consultant to the MEPSO
  • Definition of further studies, recommendations for improvements;
  • Defining appropriate future investments in the equipment for improvement of the Power Quality performance in the Transmission Network.
